An investigation of vocabulary learning perceptions and strategies of first-year English as a Foreign Language university learners

This study explored vocabulary learning strategies and perceptions among 50 first-year EFL students at Hue University. Using questionnaires and interviews, it was found that learners mainly used Memory and Cognitive Strategies, while Social Strategies were rarely applied. Students struggled with collocations, phrasal verbs, and pronunciation due to limited English exposure and personal factors like shyness. The study recommends fostering collaborative learning and personalized vocabulary instruction to improve acquisition, offering practical implications for teaching and curriculum development.
